MT-5137 MASKANT Characteristics: Transparent Red Color; Viscosity – 320-340 cps #3 Brookfield, 30 RPM, 75 F. Weight per gallon – 7.6 pounds; Flash point – 24 degrees F, T.C.C.; 5.4# VOC per gallon. MT-5137 is suitable for use in the following applications: Copper, Cadmium, Tin, Precious Metal Plating, Nickel, most acidic solutions.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE1. Before applying MT-5137, make sure the metal part is clean and free from grease, dirt and the like. The adhesion of MT-5137 could be compromised if the part is not clean prior to applying MT-5137. The part should also be completely dry before applying the maskant. 2. MT-5137 can be applied to the area to be masked by brushing, dipping or spraying. If applying by brush, use a camel hair brush and use as few brush strokes as possible. Do not brush MT-5137 as you would a typical latex or oil-based house paint. If spraying, consult the user’s guide for the spray system and follow manufacturer’s directions as to the required viscosity for spraying. 3. As a general rule, apply two coats of MT-5137 for optimum results. Depending upon the application, temperature of the plating bath, length of time in the solution, ph of the solution and other factors, it may be necessary to use three coats to achieve the desired results. Three thin coats are better than two thick coats. Apply the coats perpendicular if possible to cover the area to be masked more thoroughly. 4. Allow at least thirty minutes dry time between coats. Make sure that MT-5137 has lost all solvent odor before applying additional coats. An overnight air dry is recommended before placing masked part in the metal processing solution. Faster drying can be accomplished by force drying the masked part over a hot plate or in a forced air oven. Do not exceed 140 degrees F for force drying and no longer than fifteen minutes over a hot plate or in an oven. 5. After drying, clean any excess material with MT-5137 Reducer. Be careful not to splash any Reducer on the dried MT-5137 as it will remove or damage the coating. Touch up any missed spots and allow to dry thoroughly. 6. MT-5137 is suitable for most alkaline cleaning systems and should not be affected by the solution. A cleaning cycle of two minutes or less in a caustic cleaner or reverse electro clean should not lessen the masking properties of MT-5137. 7. After the plating or other metal processing step is completed, MT-5137 can be removed by using the MT-5137 Reducer or by using MT-2146EF. CAUTION MT-5137 CONTAINS VOLATILE SOLVENTS. ALWAYS WORK IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA AND WEAR APPROPRIATE GLOVES, EYE PROTECTION AND BREATHING EQUIPMENT. KEEP MT-5137 AWAY FROM OPEN FLAMES AND ALL POTENTIAL SOURCES OF IGNITION. STORE IN TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 50 DEGREES F AND 100 DEGREES F. KEEP ALL CONTAINERS CLOSED WHEN NOT IN USE. OBSERVE ALL EPA, OSHA AND ALL OTHER FEDERAL AND STATE REGULATIONS WHEN USING THIS PRODUCT. CUSTOMERS ARE ASKED TO EVALUATE THIS PRODUCT PRIOR TO USE TO DETERMINE SUITABILITY FOR THEIR PARTICULAR APPLICATION. APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND SUGGESTED USES DO NOT CONSTITUTE ENDORSEMENT OF THIS PRODUCT FOR ANY PARTICULAR USE OR PURPOSE.
